It’s that time of year – with the warmer weather here, it is time to get rid of your winter woolies! Don’t you love the feeling of your skin when it has been freshly waxed? Unfortunately the process of getting there is not so fun. Here are 9 ways to make the waxing process less painful.
- Seek a professional. This doesn’t mean just anyone, but someone experienced. This is important for any waxing but more crucial when receiving a bikini wax, especially a brazilian. An experienced professional will know how much wax to apply, they won’t get the wax stuck in tricky areas and they will know how to hold the skin taut to minimise pain. Someone experienced in waxing will perform the treatment more quickly as well, meaning it will be over and done with sooner!
- Avoid waxing within a week before your period. This is when you’re extra-sensitive to pain. Instead, aim to have it done a week or two after, when your pain threshold is higher. Being premenstrual or coming when you have your period does not mix well with getting a Brazilian bikini wax!
- Take a painkiller. Popping an over the counter pain reliever such as Panadol or Neurofen an hour before you commence your wax will help to reduce the pain.
- Don’t drink a lot of caffeine or alcohol. While having a couple glass of wine before getting waxed sounds like a great idea, stimulants in the system can cause skin to be extra sensitive to waxing. Give yourself a couple hours after drinking coffee or alcohol before getting waxed. Instead, drink a lot of water to hydrate your body and skin.
- Always start with clean, dry skin. Soaking in a warm bath prior to waxing can help soften hair and slightly open your pores. Skip the moisturiser though, as any oils on the skin interfere with wax’s ability to grip hair.
- Don’t tense up during your wax. Some people hold their breath or tense their whole body while getting waxed. While it might be easier said than done, breathe deeply, a relaxed person will cope much better with the pain.
- User cotton Underwear. If you plan to wax your bikini area, change into a pair of loose-fitting, clean cotton underwear post-wax. Synthetic fibres or too-tight pairs can irritate your freshly wax skin and lead to clogged pores, which can develop into painful ingrown hairs.
- Exfoliate. Exfoliating the day before your waxing session will help ease the pain by eliminating dead skin cells, which in part allows the wax to reach the shortest hairs. It’s also great for getting rid of dull spots so your skin glows.
- Be consistent. It’s much less painful if you get waxed regularly. Also, the hair gets thinner and softer after being waxed, which means the more you wax the less it’s going to hurt. So, yes, it’s probably going to hurt a bit the first time you do it. Try to book your appointments monthly and if you stick with it regularly, it is going to hurt a whole lot less.
